Hey Adam– I want to thank you for your great blog and the work you put into it. I read it almost every day.
Thank you for your contributions and for your kind comments. So far, it’s been a lot of fun. I should have started doing this a long time ago.
Adam,
I am a resident of Eagle’s Landing subdivision and recently read your article, “That huge sigh of relief you hear is coming from Eagles Landing”. Can I assume that this article is referring to the same piece of property that was being considered for Section-8 housing? I was not aware of the idea for upscale age restricted apartments, but this has to be the same issue. Correct?

Yes, after the planning commission meeting a group of your neighbors met with the developer and town staff to discuss conditions that might make a 70-unit apartment complex a better fit. Neighbors living closest to the site were invited.
The property owner, on the advice of his attorney, rejected the conditions and ended the discussions. The property owner never had any plans to develop site. He wants to sell it and felt attaching conditions would make the land less marketable.
Not long after that, the property owner approached town staff and asked whether luxury age-restricted (55+) apartments might be a better fit.
That was the last development before he and his attorney pulled the zoning petition. Again, the owner was not planning to develop the land, only sell it.
That’s why I’ve never been able to figure out where the talk of Section 8 housing originated. My guess is that someone heard about the proposed rezoning and started imagining all of the possibilities.

Just wanted to let you know about an article on today’s (4/4/09) New York Times website about a minor league baseball team coming to Zion, Illinois. The title of the article is “Major League Hopes Pinned on the Minors” (or something close to that…).

Sounds like they’re anticipating their new team every bit as much as we are.
After seeing the presentation of the design for the Multimodal Transportation Center, I am surprised that there hasn’t been more “buzz” about it in the news. I think the design looks great and should get people more excited about it (as long as they aren’t paying for it, of course). Do you think it has been in the planning stage for so long that everyone is either tired of it or thinks it won’t happen?
Elizabeth, I think part of the issue is that we *are* paying for it, or will be.
I think part of the issue is that it’s been in the planning stage for quite some time, part of the issue is that the form and function have evolved and there’s some confusion about what it is/will be/is supposed to be, and I think part of the issue is the price tag and overall stalling of the development in general.
It is a beautiful building. Can’t argue with that.
I’ve seen some early concept art and plans, but where can I find some updated ones at?

My wife and I are wondering when Normal will start collecting recycling at the curb like Bloomington does? I like how progressive Normal is, but I think they are lagging behind on this. When is the last time we looked at the costs on this?
